Common Locale Data Repository

The Common XML Locale Repository project is a joint effort among the members of the Linux Application Development Environment (aka LADE) Workgroup of the Free Standards Group's OpenI18N (formerly known as Linux Internationalization Initiative or Li18nux) team. The founding members of the workgroup are IBM, Sun and OpenOffice.org. The workgroup is open to additional members, both industry and community.

The purpose of the Common XML Locale Repository project is to devise a general XML format for the exchange of culturally sensitive (locale) information for use in application and system development, and to gather, store, and make available data generated in that format.

The locale XML specification and locale data XML files checked into a CVS repository which is available via the web. The repository information is as the following:

  • For ease of comparison, the culture information of each locale is stored in XML format.

  • Platform specific locale information is grouped into a platform folder. For example, the windows/ folder contains all the locale data on Windows platform in XML format.

  • The CLDR Status document explains the current status of the project, and provides links to the comparison charts. These charts provide a side-by-side comparison of the XML data from various sources.

  • The Data Formats paper provides background information on the way that locale information is formatted.

  • For more information, please see the readme.html.

Data Collection Process

  • The platform specific culture information was generated programmatically by requesting through the native APIs on the platform. The results are then converted to be compliant to the "Locale Data Markup Language Specification".

  • The culture information from these various sources is used to create the comparison charts outlining the differences of any data elements in a locale/culture information data repertoire.

  • For more details on the locale data collection process, please see the process document for more details.
