Mission Statement

As the use of Linux and other open source technologies become ever more widespread, governments around the world are actively looking at how to influence, participate and benefit from these technologies. For example, some have begun to publish national Linux standards, and some have passed legislation to encourage increased adoption of open source technologies in the government.

The Government Outreach subcommittee's purpose is to keep in contact with the various governments around the world, and specifically on the areas of internationalization and localization.

We will:

• work with various governments to identify their unique requirements;
• invite them to participate in the development of OpenI18N specifications and our other activities; and
• promote OpenI18N specifications.

Hopefully, this will achieve the following goals:

• more awareness of different i18n and l10n issues for different cultures;
• ensure our specifications cater for everybody's needs; and
• discourage the development of overlapping but incompatible standards.
